I decided to write about this because studies have shown that in fact, it's estimated that roughly 85% of people worldwide (adults and adolescents) have low self-esteem. So, sit tight and relax because you are about to read one of the most amazing articles you would ever see.

WHAT IS CONFIDENCE

There has been numerous research and definitions of the term confidence and that brings up to the authentic meaning of confidence.

Confidence is a state of being clear-headed either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Confidence comes from a Latin word 'fidere' which means "to trust"; therefore, having self-confidence is having trust in one's self. [According to Wikipedia].

It is also defined the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. {Oxford Dictionary}

Self-confidence according to Shrauger & Schohn, 1995, p. 256 refers to “people’s sense of competence and skill, their perceived capability to deal effectively with various situations”.

So, through these definitions will define confidence as simply the feeling of having little doubt about yourself and abilities, it comes from your complete feeling of well-being, acceptance of your body and mind in everyday situations.

SELF CONFIDENCE

With the definitions garnered from the definitions of confidence, I will define Self-confidence as the act of an individual to have trust in their abilities, qualities and judgements. Self-confidence is very vital in one's every day activities because having confidence in one's self helps individuals to complete tasks, objectives, assignments, exams and even jobs.

BENEFITS OF SELF CONFIDENCE

There are various benefits of self-confidence and I am going explain Five [5] properly validated benefits that stands out completely.

1. Self-confidence helps you to be your best under stress; Self-confidence plays an important role in the lives of individuals especially Athletes, Musicians, Scientists etc. Because when you are confident you will perform up to your potential thereby making you to work hard to perform your best when it counts the most for instance a popular Portuguese footballer know as Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn't have attained such achievements and high status assuming he didn't have confidence in his self when being in stressful situations, therefore his story is a high motivation to all individuals to always work hard despite the situation you see yourself in.

2. Self-confidence helps you to gain energy and motivation; This is a good benefit because confidence gives you the right positive energy to take action to achieve your personal and professional goals and dreams, the more highly motivated and energized the more highly you are to attain goals, complete objectives and shun depression.

3. Self-confidence helps you to experience less fear and anxiety; Well, if you haven't heard about rumination, it is simply the excessive repetitive thinking about the same event that might be distressful, this causes anxiety and that's where self-confidence comes in it gives you the ability to overcome these situations thereby you would be able to break the cycle of over thinking.

4. Self-confidence gives you resilience; That's right well having more self-confidence doesn't mean that you won't fail, you will and might even fail a lot. As you continue to push yourself to try new things, you’ll realize that failure and mistakes lead to growth. The more willing to fail you are, the more likely you are to succeed because you’re in action. For example, Thomas Edison an American inventor and businessman was told by his teachers he was ‘too stupid to learn anything’ due to his numerous failures but this didn't keep him from stopping rather through self-confidence he gained more resilience to work hard and now he is known as one of the most successful individuals in history.

5. Self-confidence helps you to make the right decisions; Self-confidence boosts one's esteem and makes them to choose the right decisions. When you are self-confident you choose yourself, most people who lack self-confidence always try to please others which is a wrong decision and doesn't always end well, therefore the more you will make the right decisions aligned with your deepest desires and core values the faster set goals and objectives would be accomplished.

CAUSE OF LOW SELF CONFIDENCE

There are many reasons why someone might have low self-esteem. However, it often starts in childhood experiences, trauma, perhaps with a feeling that you are a failure or unable to live up to expectations or even your sexuality. It can also be the result of adult experiences such as a difficult relationship, either personal or at work and all these could possibly lead to depression.

HOW TO IMPROVE ONE'S SELF CONFIDENCE

 1. Build positive relationships and shun negative ones; This is a vital way to improve self-confidence studies have shown that keeping bad associations could lead to demoralization and this would really affect your self-confidence. You will probably find that there are certain people and certain relationships that make you feel better than others. If there are people who make you feel bad about yourself, try to avoid them. Build relationships with people who make you feel good about yourself and avoid the relationships that drag you down.

2. Motivate yourself to achieve aims and objectives; It is very important to always motivate yourself in everyday situations because lack of motivation kills morale and self-esteem. You have to try and get valuable items ranging from quotes, books, videos, music, podcasts etc. in order to improve your self-confidence, you should always learn to motivate yourself in order to avoid procrastination as it reduces one's morale to fulfil set goals and objectives.

3. Help others; This is also a good way to improve one's self confidence. you have to learn to help others in different things weather minor or major tasks and situations, this helps you to create a sense of belonging in one's self and thereby boosting your self-confidence.

4. Avoid idleness; There is a popular saying which states that " An idle mind is the Devil's workshop" yes and it has been proven true, studies have shown that people who are always idle are more likely to experience low self-confidence thereby leading to depression. It is also known that most negative menaces caused in the society are as a result of idleness.
